Homeowners are being urged to ensure that they only use electricians listed on a government-back register when having work carried out.
Wansbeck MP Ian Lavery’s advice comes after he attended a Parliamentary drop-in session arranged to boost awareness of the Registered Competent Person Electrical (RCPE) register and improve electrical safety in homes.
“Electrical hazards can prove fatal so it is vital that everyone is aware of the simple steps they can take to reduce risks in their own homes,” he said.
“The most important first step is to choose a competent, registered electrician who works safely to legally required standards.
“The initiative of the RCPE makes that choice easy for everyone and should give people peace of mind knowing that they are hiring a registered electrician to work in their home.”
The RCPE makes choosing a competent tradesman easier than ever before by listing all electrical firms registered to carry out work on domestic properties.
All registered firms have demonstrated their ability to work safely to industry standards as well as being regularly assessed by a government-approved scheme operator.
Their registration also allows them to display the instantly recognised RCPE mark.
